The heart pumps blood through the arteries to the various organs and parts of the body.  The pressure that blood exerts on the walls of the arteries is known as the blood pressure.  It is measured with an instrument called sphygmomanometer which takes measurement in millimeters of mercury.

The highest pressure reached during each heart beat is called the systolic pressure and the lowest between two beats is the diastolic pressure. Normal blood pressure is 120/80 and should not exceed 140/90 in order to stay fit and free from any types of strokes and heart attacks. The pressure increases with age and may go up to 160/90.

Further, these measures undergo natural variations and also change in response to stress, nutritional factors, drugs or disease.
Hypertension refers to the arterial pressure being abnormally high as opposed to hypotension when it is abnormally low.
