A healthy alternative to commercially produced bath products is the herbal bath.  Natural blends can help soothe multiple ailments.

Herbal baths are free of artificial ingredients found in commercially manufactured bath products.

Blending herbs together and placing them in warm water can soothe many ailments while healing the body.  A visit to a health food store for individual herbs or blends is an economical alternative to purchased premade products with dyes, preservatives, detergents and other chemicals that can irritate and damage the skin.

Herbal baths is an ancient tradition going back to 1100B.C. where there are recorded documentations of the use to relieve summer heat symptoms.  Many herbal baths were used to treat conditions such as fever, pain, wounds, arthritis and infections.  Many herbal baths were used as a beauty treatment as the herbs were absorbed into the skin and breathed into the lungs benefiting the body and its functions.

Herbal bath soaks offer therapeutic relief not only to the aches of the body but the mind and soul.

Special mixtures can be blended to help a particular ache and pain, to relax the mind and to help the body to detox after illnesses and everyday exposure to environmental toxins.

Herbs and other ingredients can be mixed in large batches and kept in an airtight glass container until ready for use.  The herbal ingredients can then be put in a muslin bag or 12 in square piece of cheesecloth tied into a bag and used as a sachet or also known as a bath tea bag.  The organic dry herb mixtures will be good and potent for up to one year when stored in a glass container.  After one year, discard and make a fresh mixture.  Ask an herbalist for specific herbs to assist with a condition.  Try different mixtures until you find favorites that can be used whenever a bath and soak is needed.  Treat oneself to an herbal soak on a regular basis for over all good health.

When making a tea bag mixture.

Steep the herbs in the muslin bag or 12 in square piece of cheesecloth tied into a bag in boiling water for 30 minutes and add the tea and the bag to the full bath tub.  The steeped herbs such as chamomile and peppermint will be more potent this way by having released the oils into the tea.  The bath is now full of relaxing goodness.  Soak for 20 to 30 minutes for a wonderful night sleep.

Recipes for Herbal Bath Mixtures

To relax aches and pains try this mixture:

  •  ½ cup dried lemon-balm leaves
  • ½ cup dried rosemary leaves
  • ¼ cup chamomile leaves
Mix the ingredients together.  The mixture can be added to the bath after the tub has been filled or placed in a small muslin bag or 12 in square piece of cheesecloth tied into a bag and steeped for 30 minutes as a tea then added to the filled tub.
Chamomile leaves
Chamomile leaves is good for skin inflammation and can be used alone to soothe skin inflammations such as eczema and psoriasis with its natural antibacterial and analgesic properties.

To assist with a cold and chest congestion

  • ½ cup dried thyme leaves
  • 1 cup dried sage leaves
  • ¼ cup dried rosemary leaves
Mix the ingredients together.  The mixture can be added to the bath after the tub has been filled or placed in a small muslin or 12 in square piece of cheesecloth tied into a bag and steeped for 30 minutes as a tea then added to the filled tub.

For an added kick add 2-3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to the mixture.

Healthy Skin:

  • ¼ cup ginger juice
  • 1/8 cup white vinegar
  • ½ cup wine
Mix together and pour into warm water and soak for 20-30 minutes.

To Detoxify the Body

  • 4 ounces Red clover flowers
  • 4 ounces sage leaves
  • 4 ounces nettle leaves
  • 4 ounces peppermint leaves
  • 4 ounces yarrow
  • 2-3 drops of peppermint essential oil
Mix the herbs together.  Place a small amount of the herbs in a small muslin bag or 12 in square piece of cheesecloth and steep together as a tea for 30 minutes in boiling water and add to filled tub, tea and all.  Add the drops of essential oil for added potency.  Store remaining herb mixture in a glass container, for the next detox bath.

To relax and draw out toxins use ½ cup of dried lavender with 1 cup of Epsom salt. Pour into a warm bath and stir to dissolve the Epsom salt and release the lavender into the water.  This is a great way to relax and detox the body at the same time.

To maximize the enjoyment of an herbal bath, keep the bath water between 34°C  and 40°C.  If the water is too hot, the body will begin to perspire and sweat and lose out on the full benefits of the soak and the herbs.

Add the herbs to a filled tub to avoid premature evaporation.  Herbal baths should be enjoyed for 20-30 minutes for maximum benefits.  Herbs offer so many natural benefits, use this natural way to relax and heal.
