Over-eating, too much spice, or eating too fast can cause acid build up and stomach upset, better known as indigestion. Home and herbal remedies can help with the occasional acid stomach.

Indigestion is a stomach condition where acidity, gas and heartburn are the result of improper digestion.  While eating on the run, has become part of a quick lunch, this is one of the main causes of indigestion.  Mild episodes of indigestion have symptoms that include, heartburn, nausea, gas, or feeling bloated.  Chronic episodes of indigestion, can lead to bigger health issues such as gastritis and even gastric ulcers.

Home Remedies for Indigestion

For the occasional acidity of the stomach, there are several home and herbal remedies that are easily made to treat these episodes.

Baking Soda:  Mix 2 tablespoons of household baking soda with 6 ounces of water and stir.  Drink the mixture for immediate relief from acid stomach or indigestion.

Pineapple juice:  4 ounces of pure pineapple juice or several pieces of fresh pineapple after a meal can benefit the treatment of indigestion.

Lemons:  Mix the juice of one lemon in a cup of warm water fights against bacteria and prevents acid indigestion when taken before a meal.

Aloe Vera juice:  Food grade aloe vera juice when taken can relieve the burning feeling of the stomach when the acid reflux occurs.  One tablespoon of aloe vera juice diluted in a glass of water or fruit juice can put out the fire.  Please note that drinking large amounts of aloe vera juice acts as a laxative and can cause diarrhea.

Olive oil:  Take 1 tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil fifteen minutes before a meal of spicy, hot food, such as Mexican or Szechuan or Indian food with curry, to coat the stomach and prevent upset stomach issues later.

Apple Cider Vinegar:  Take 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar mixed with 1 tablespoon of honey in a glass of warm water before a spicy meal can be taken to ward off indigestion later.

Anise seeds:  To prevent sour stomach or to cure the sour stomach after spicy food or a heavy meal with rich food, chew on anise seeds to settle stomach and sweeten the breath.

Fresh fruits: Grapes or orange sections aid in digestion and the elimination of acids that will irritate the lining of the stomach.

Stomach Upset Herbal Remedies

Peppermint:  For cramps, nausea and that bloated, full feeling, try the essential oil of peppermint, which is menthol, easy the stomach cramps and stimulates digestion and has an overall positive effect on the body’s digestive processes.

Mint:  Mint has been cooling heartburn since ancient times.  Mint has properties to calm nausea and to cease vomiting.  The menthol of mint has shown in some studies to aide in the prevention of stomach ulcers.

Slippery Elm:  This herb was discovered by early healers to be a tonic to aid in the treatment of digestion issues and even dysentery.  Slippery elm is thought to soothe the inflamed tissue of the stomach and aid in the flushing of toxins from the body.Herbal Teas For Stomach Upset

To settle the upset stomach and relieve nausea, by soothing the intestinal lining

  • 8 ounces of peppermint leaves
  • 8 ounces of lemon-balm leaves
  • 8 ounces of fennel or caraway seeds

Mix together.  Use 1 teaspoon of the mixture and add 1 cup of boiling water.  Steep 10-15 minutes.  Strain.  Sip  3-4 cups daily.

To relieve the intestinal cramps 

  • 1 ounce peppermint leaves
  • 1 ounce camellia leaves
  • 1 ounce ginger root

Mix together.  Use 1 teaspoon of the mixture and add 1 cup of boiling water.  Steep 10-15 minutes.  Strain.  Sip 3-4 times daily.  This mixture is slightly bitter but soothes the lining while stimulating digestion.
Chamomile tea has flavonoids that prevent gas and relieves abdominal cramps caused by digestive upset or indigestion.

To treat gastric upset, drink chamomile tea for a period of several weeks, 3-4 cups daily.

For gastric upset and abdominal pain

  • 1 ounce chamomile flowers
  • 1 ounce peppermint leaves
  • 1 ounce caraway or fennel seed
  • 1 ounce angelica

Mix together.  Use 1 teaspoon of the mixture.  Add 1 cup of boiling water.  Steep tea 10-15 minutes.  Strain. Drink as needed to relieve that too-full feeling and stimulate digestion.

When making herbal tea mixtures use air tight containers for storage.  The herbal tea mixtures will stay fresh for several weeks.  To eliminate a bitter taste, add honey to sweeten.

Many home and herbal remedies are passed down through families.  Many have been handed down through the ages through herbal healers and even family practitioners.

The next time there is an episode of “too much of a good thing”, check the cabinet in the kitchen or the refrigerator and there could be just the right home/herbal remedy ready to stop the stomach acid and indigestion.
